I Can See Clearly Now – Solar Panel Cleaning How-To

Have you noticed a significant drop in solar performance? It might be time for a bi-annual cleaning of your panels. In order for your panels to work at peak performance it is suggested to clean your panels twice a year.

NOTE: First, check for your manufacturer’s recommendations. They may have instructions or restrictions which forego cleaning panels on your own that could void your warranty.

If you’re unsure about cleaning your panels yourself or your panels are difficult to reach, consider hiring a professional service to clean them for you. But if you’re willing to tackle the job yourself, follow below:

  1. Turn off your system’s power.
  2. Check the temperature. Finding the perfect day may not be feasible for your schedule. A cooler day can prevent damage to the panels due to drastic temperature from the cold water. Cloudy days are optimal. The next best time is early morning or late afternoon when temperatures are lower.
  3. Gather supplies needed:
    • Harness to secure yourself if cleaning rooftop panels
    • Bucket of lukewarm water
    • Mild detergent
    • Ladder if necessary
    • Squeegee if preferred
    • Soft cloths
    • Soft bristle brush with extension pole is optimal (a car wash brush is perfect for this)
    • Hose with gentle spray nozzle setting
  4. First rinse the loose dirt and debris with a gentle stream of water. Do not use high pressure as it can damage the wiring underneath.
  5. With your bucket of mild soapy water and a soft brush or cloth, gently scrub the panel’s surface. DO NOT use harsh chemicals or abrasive materials as they can damage or scratch the panels.
  6. Rinse the soapy water and remainder of dirt off with a soft spray of water.
  7. You can use a squeegee to remove excess water to prevent streaks. And/or dry with a soft cloth. If you prefer you CAN let the panels dry on their own.
  8. When turning the system back on, consult the owner’s manual for specific instructions on how to start your system once the panels are clean and dry.

NOTE: As you go through the cleaning process, take time to note any cracks, chips or loose components. Relay that information to your installers for repair or replacement.
