Is My Home Suitable For Rooftop Solar Panels

By Merrillyn Butterfield As solar power continues its impressive rise in popularity and accessibility, many homeowners find themselves asking: Is my home a good candidate for rooftop solar panels? The answer depends on several critical factors—including roof condition, environmental and neighborhood considerations, and financial viability. At ProLux Energy, we believe in empowering homeowners with clear, actionable insights. Below are the key factors to evaluate before making the switch to solar: 1. Roof Age & Condition   Your roof should have at least 10–15 years of life remaining to support the long-term performance of a solar system. If your roof is nearing replacement age, it may be wise to address that first to avoid costly panel removal and reinstallation later. 2. Structural Integrity Solar panels generally add 2–4 pounds per square foot of weight. A certified ProLux Energy technician will conduct a thorough structural assessment to ensure your roof can safely bear the load—because peace of mind begins with safety and engineering excellence. 3. Roof Material Compatibility Solar panels are highly adaptable and can be installed on asphalt shingles, tile, metal, and even some flat roofs. Our expert installers tailor each project to your home’s unique material and structure. 4. Roof Orientation & Layout A south-facing roof is optimal for maximum sun exposure and energy output. However, east- and west-facing orientations can still offer strong performance. Features like dormers, chimneys, and vents may limit panel placement, but our design team specializes in maximizing usable space for optimal efficiency. 5. Shading & Obstructions Tall trees, neighboring buildings, or architectural features that cast shadows can reduce solar productivity. During your consultation, we conduct a shade analysis to determine your roof’s solar potential. 6. Homeowners Associations (HOAs) Be sure to review your HOA’s guidelines. Fortunately, many states enforce “Solar Access Rights” that prohibit HOAs from outright banning solar installations—ensuring your right to harness clean energy. 7. Historic Districts & Special Zones Homes located in designated historic or aesthetic zones may face unique design restrictions. ProLux Energy will help you navigate local guidelines to maintain compliance without compromising your solar goals. 8. Permitting Requirements Local governments require permits for solar installation. ProLux Energy manages all permitting and paperwork on your behalf—eliminating hassle and ensuring full regulatory compliance. 9. Financial Options Whether you prefer an outright purchase, solar loan, lease, or power purchase agreement (PPA), our team will provide a customized financial plan to help you achieve the best return on investment—including guidance on how to reach net-zero billing. 10. Net Metering & Utility Credits Net metering enables you to sell excess solar energy back to your utility provider, helping reduce or eliminate your energy bills. This is one of the most powerful tools for homeowners seeking energy independence and long-term savings. Let’s Power Your Future Together These core considerations lay the groundwork for smart solar planning. At ProLux Energy, our mission is to deliver premium solar systems supported by exceptional customer service from start to finish. Schedule your complimentary, no-pressure in-home energy audit today. Let’s work together to lower your utility bills, reduce your carbon footprint, and give you true energy independence. Contact us at:Phone: 480.597.5178Email: support@proluxenergy.com

Solar Gone Wild: How Rooftop Installations Affect Our Feathered Friends

B   By Merrillyn Butterfield Is there cause for concern when it comes to the impact of rooftop solar installations on bird populations? According to the National Audubon Society, they report: “Audubon strongly supports properly sited photovoltaic solar power that avoids, minimizes, or mitigates impacts to birds and their habitat. As with all forms of renewable energy, we work with Congress and wildlife agencies to ensure that all projects are carried out in accordance with federal laws, like the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.”(Audubon Society, “Solar Power and Birds,” July 21, 2020, https://audubon.org) This responsible stance underscores the organization’s commitment to both sustainability and wildlife protection. Rooftop Solar: Minimal Impact, Maximum Benefit While certain types of solar technologies—such as large-scale solar farms—can pose challenges to bird populations, photovoltaic rooftop panels, the most commonly used solar systems, have been shown to have minimal ecological impact. These installations are environmentally optimal because they repurpose existing built environments—such as residential and commercial rooftops—without encroaching on natural habitats. In essence, they transform underutilized surface space into clean energy generators while leaving our ecosystems undisturbed. Climate Change: The Greater Threat It’s important to recognize the broader picture. Climate science reveals that without intervention, rising global temperatures could threaten up to two-thirds of North America’s bird species with extinction. Renewable energy sources like solar play a pivotal role in curbing carbon emissions and stabilizing the climate. By choosing solar, we’re not just reducing our carbon footprint—we’re actively preserving the future of our avian neighbors. Why Choose ProLux Energy? At ProLux Energy, we take our environmental responsibility seriously. What is your Carbon Footprint

What is your Carbon Footprint? Let ProLux Energy walk you through it. There is much talk about alternative sources of energy, “going green,” and our carbon footprint. Just what do these terms mean and what effect do we have on them? Alternative sources of energy can be as simple as harnessing our natural renewable energy including wind and solar power, hydroelectric, and bioenergy; however, these fossil fuels are long-standing non-renewable sources.   “Going green” is a term that refers to making choices by reducing the negative impact on the environment. It is the way we care for the earth and its resources.  For example:  When we use electricity for lights, appliances or other electronic devices, we don’t create carbon dioxide. But the power plants that produce that electricity do, by using coal that emits carbon dioxide to create that energy and power these plants. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says these electricity plants create the largest carbon footprints and the most amount of carbon dioxide. This will have far-reaching repercussions in our lifetime and those lives who come after.  Are we responsible users? Do we look for ways to preserve the beauty we enjoy around us or better yet, improve where we can. We can make small changes that, collectively, have a big impact on the environment in an eco-friendly way. Below are a few examples of “going green” and reducing our carbon footprint: Recycle all products that can be recycled Use cloth bags instead of paper or plastic Walk or bike instead of driving  Refurb and reuse products Compost your household food scraps Do not litter Buy used products  Pick up yours and other’s trash “Going green” can be a gradual process as it’s difficult to change all of our habits at once. However, even small changes can make a positive impact on the environment.  Your carbon footprint is the amount of greenhouse gases you produce through your actions and how much energy you use. It’s measured in terms of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane that is released into the atmosphere. For example, greenhouse gas emissions are produced from heating our homes through burning oil or gas, burning gasoline when we drive our cars, or using electricity generated from natural gas, oil and coal which can vary by where you live and your personal habits and choices. The United States has one of the highest carbon footprint rates in the world; 16 tons. On average, the global rate is closer to 4 tons. So, how can we begin to reduce our carbon footprint? Some easy examples are by: Harnessing renewable power such as solar Weatherizing your home Using clean heating and cooling Using alternate low-carbon transportation Using all-electric energy savings appliances Not idling our cars for long periods Walking or biking where possible Purchasing electric tools for the yard Reducing and composting food waste  The larger our carbon footprint the more difficult it is on the environment.  ProLux Energy can show you how to help reduce your carbon footprint and contribute positively with a top-tier solar system. Call 217.846.8056 or support@proluxenergy.com. Remember…tread lightly where we can, when we can. Let’s keep the path less traveled, that way.

Brady Ochoa Wins Professional Title, WCC Mexican Pacific Coast Champion

Prolux Energy is proud to sponsor Brady Ochoa, who emerged victorious, winning the current title of West Coast Conference (WCC) Mexican Pacific Coast Champion. He fought Jorge Ortega on February 15, 2025, in Colima, Mexico, leading to his first professional title at the age of 17. “This is a stepping stone to my ultimate goal of one day becoming Champion of the World,” said Brady Ochoa. At the young age of four, Ochoa began his journey into combat sports, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)/Muay Thai/Boxing. He did not specialize in boxing until age 14. Rather, he began daily practice of total athlete development in his father, Eddie Ochoa’s, high performance boxing and sports gym, Cross Driven Athletics. Coach Ochoa is a well respected amateur, pro boxing/MMA/Team USA coach, who believes the basis of a good athlete includes development of proper fundamentals and total athletic skills, some of which include mental and physical toughness, balance, coordination, strength, speed, agility and power. “I did not care about building Brady’s record. It was about building character and grit through perseverance, a hard work ethic, and overcoming adversity… day in and day out. This is why teaching your kids and training them up in the word of God matters. You teach your kids at a very early age to rely and trust in the Lord for strength and overcoming difficulties,” said Coach Ochoa. ProLux Energy became acquainted with this rising young athlete from Gilbert, Arizona and began sponsoring him in 2024. “In a generation obsessed with going viral, Brady Ochoa is proving that true greatness isn’t about likes or followers. It’s about discipline, perseverance and an unshakable work ethic. While others do the bare minimum, Brady puts in the extra hours, constantly pushing himself to be better. His humility and gratitude almost outshine his talent in the ring, and that’s what makes him truly special. He embodies the spirit of a champion, not just because he wins fights, but because of the way he carries himself inside and outside the ring. As Joe Frazier said, ‘Champions aren’t made in the ring; they are merely recognized there.’ Brady is living proof of that, and I’m honored to support him on his journey. I can’t wait to see where his career takes him, but I’m just grateful to have witnessed the beginning of his story,” said Nate Butterfield, Co-founder of ProLux Energy. The sponsorship by ProLux provides crucial support for Ochoa’s training and competition expenses, allowing him to focus on his athletic development and achieve his goals. Prolux’s commitment to sustainability and excellence in the field complements Ochoa’s dedication to making a positive impact both inside and outside the ring. “We are honored to support Brady as he continues to rise in the boxing arena. His dedication, discipline and passion for the sport align perfectly with our values. We are excited to be part of his journey and contribute to his success,” said Cameron DeLoach, Co-founder of ProLux Energy. Ochoa said, “It’s truly an honor to be able to do what I love and am grateful to God, first and foremost, and also my sponsors and fans for their support. I want to personally thank ProLux Energy and Solarships for their unwavering support. I am truly grateful and honored to have them in my corner.” Ochoa began sparring MMA professionals at the age of 13, World Champions at 15 and 16 and now at the age of 17, has reached his first professional title. “Born for this. God’s plan. Made for this. God’s plan,” is one of many inspirational quotes Ochoa lives by. His commitment to God runs deep. “To me, greatness is more than just fulfilling your dreams or being the best at what you do. Greatness is when you are living your life to honor God and to make a difference in others. To be the best, you have to work with the best. There are no shortcuts to greatness,” said Ochoa. We look forward to this summer as Ochoa fights for the World Boxing Council) WBC Youth World Title, his next level of greatness. I Can See Clearly Now – Solar Panel Cleaning How-To

Have you noticed a significant drop in solar performance? It might be time for a bi-annual cleaning of your panels. In order for your panels to work at peak performance it is suggested to clean your panels twice a year. NOTE: First, check for your manufacturer’s recommendations. They may have instructions or restrictions which forego cleaning panels on your own that could void your warranty. If you’re unsure about cleaning your panels yourself or your panels are difficult to reach, consider hiring a professional service to clean them for you. But if you’re willing to tackle the job yourself, follow below: Turn off your system’s power. Check the temperature. Finding the perfect day may not be feasible for your schedule. A cooler day can prevent damage to the panels due to drastic temperature from the cold water. Cloudy days are optimal. The next best time is early morning or late afternoon when temperatures are lower. Gather supplies needed: Harness to secure yourself if cleaning rooftop panels Bucket of lukewarm water Mild detergent Ladder if necessary Squeegee if preferred Soft cloths Soft bristle brush with extension pole is optimal (a car wash brush is perfect for this) Hose with gentle spray nozzle setting First rinse the loose dirt and debris with a gentle stream of water. Do not use high pressure as it can damage the wiring underneath. With your bucket of mild soapy water and a soft brush or cloth, gently scrub the panel’s surface. DO NOT use harsh chemicals or abrasive materials as they can damage or scratch the panels. Rinse the soapy water and remainder of dirt off with a soft spray of water. You can use a squeegee to remove excess water to prevent streaks. And/or dry with a soft cloth. If you prefer you CAN let the panels dry on their own. When turning the system back on, consult the owner’s manual for specific instructions on how to start your system once the panels are clean and dry. NOTE: As you go through the cleaning process, take time to note any cracks, chips or loose components. Relay that information to your installers for repair or replacement. If questions or concerns arise, please feel free to contact us at 217.846.8056 or admin@proluxenergy.com. By keeping your panels clean and in good repair, you will ensure maximization of your ProLux System. The future never looked brighter.
